COVID-19: LA VARIANTE DELTA Y SU IMPACTO EN LOS NIÑOS

El Perú está cerca de ingresar a la tercera ola de contagios por la Covid-19, como se ha venido reportando en varios países alrededor del mundo como los Estados Unidos que, en esta etapa del virus, viene atendiendo a su mayor cantidad de pacientes menores de edad.

La principal causa del 83% de los casos de la COViD-19 en el país norte americano, está relacionada con el levantamiento de las exigencias de uso de mascarilla y otras medidas de bioseguridad que se exigían.

La situación ha causado ansiedad y enfrentamiento mediático entre los padres de familia estadounidenses, con las autoridades que han iniciado la reapertura de las escuelas y prohíben que, dentro de los locales educativos, se obliguen a los jóvenes a usar mascarilla.

“Si bien aún no está claro si la variante Delta causa una enfermedad más aguda en los niños, su alto nivel de contagio viene provocando un aumento exponencial de los casos pediátricos de COVID-19”, señaló el epidemiólogo y docente de la Universidad César Vallejo, Miguel Ángel Tresierra.

Según la estación del año en la que nos encontremos, por ejemplo, muchos virus son comunes en los niños en los meses de temperaturas bajas y menos frecuentes durante los meses más cálidos. En los Estados Unidos, las tasas de CoViD-19 a nivel nacional habían estado bajando durante la primavera, sin embargo, cuando se propagó la variante delta, eso comenzó a cambiar. Muchos niños presentaban síntomas respiratorios y al ser evaluados para SARS CoV2, dieron positivos lo cual llamó la atención de pediatras y epidemiólogos, pues precisamente se creía que la población infantil tenía muy poca probabilidad de infectarse, además, los menores de 12 años, aún no son candidatos a recibir la vacuna.

Para el epidemiólogo, iniciar clases presenciales sería un error, pues las aulas podrían convertirse en focos de infección. “¿Quién nos asegura que los niños van a respetar las medidas de bioseguridad? Por su misma inocencia y ganas de jugar, se descuidarían y contagiarían; de igual forma a sus familiares, si alguno se contagia en el colegio”, señaló.

Miguel Tresierra mencionó que los hospitales del Perú no están preparados para recibir a un número elevado de niños contagiados con COVID-19. “Es importante prepararnos y educar a la población en el manejo de algunos casos en los domicilios, reconociendo signos de alarma, para no saturar las camas hospitalarias pediátricas”, pidió.

“A los padres de familia les pido paciencia y que eduquen a sus hijos sobre el cumplimiento de las medidas. Se deben extremar las medidas de bioseguridad y no relajarse, así las autoridades hayan levantado ciertas restricciones. No deben acudir a lugares donde haya aglomeración de gente. Y, debemos esperar las vacunas para los menores de edad”, expresó Miguel Tresierra Ayala.

¿Qué es la variante delta?

La variante DELTA es una forma del virus, identificada en la India en diciembre del 2020. Esta variante, altamente contagiosa, es la que ha llevado a la pandemia mundial a experimentar una tercera ola de contagios. Esta variante, puede ser transmitida incluso por vacunados, aunque esto no represente mayor peligrosidad.

“No todos los virus no se reproducen solos. En el caso del Covid-19 y su variante delta, necesitan ingresar a una célula humana en este caso, de allí puede reproducirse exactamente igual como ingresó o con alguna modificación en su estructura. Estas alteraciones pueden hacer que el virus sea más contagioso o produzca una enfermedad más grave. Hasta este momento, las variantes identificadas, sólo significan un aumento en su contagiosidad”, resaltó el médico epidemiólogo.

“Es importante que los ciudadanos tengan en cuenta que a pesar de la vacunación deben seguir respetando las medidas de bioseguridad. Si bien, los estudios muestran que todas las vacunas protegen contra la enfermedad COViD-19 grave; la variante Delta es 100% más contagiosa que el virus original de Wuhan”, finalizó Tresierra.
